CORNWALL – The head of Morbern is hoping a major expansion for the Cornwall plant will give them a better foothold in the international market.
The High Point, N.C. based manufacturer of coated fabrics and specialty knitted fabrics has announced a $9 million expansion of its Cornwall facility on Boundary Road.
The investment will add 20,000 square feet to the existing facility of 125,000 square feet and will include a high-speed coating line.
“This is a big step forward for Morbern and for Cornwall,” CEO Mark Bloomfield said.
The expansion has been in the works for nine months and construction is taking place over the summer.
Local construction firm Perras-Distefano is doing the work.
Morbern funded the project through a loan from the Business Development Bank of Canada as well as a grant from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund (EODF).
While the company has not said whether any positions will be added, in order to be eligible for an EODF grant, a company must create at least ten new jobs and invest over $500,000.
The new expanded part of the plant should be open by the new year.
The plant employs roughly 250 people.
