BARRIE, Ont. – The St. Lawrence College Sharks men’s team has taken gold at the Challenge Cup.
The Sharks blanked Fanshawe College 5-0, downed Trent University 2-1 and got by Conestoga College 2-1 in a shootout in the semifinal and shut out Fleming College 1-0 in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The final game saw Cornwall down host Georgian College 2-0 with goals from Matt Gregoire and Brian Landry, who scored on an empty net with six seconds on the clock.
The Sharks finish the season at 20-2-1.
“Words can’t express how proud we are of this group,” Sharks coach Mike Pettinella said. “The guys deserved it from day one. They were so committed to our team approach, with everyone buying into their role, it really made a difference the last two days.”
“We remember the disappointment from last year (referring to the Sharks settling for Silver at the 2014-15 Challenge Cup) and wanted to win so badly for the returning players that were on that team,” said co-coach Sean Boulerice.
Now in the post-season, the Sharks Athletics Banquet will be held April 6, 2016.
