CORNWALL – Ask a Cornwallite what’s the worst intersection in the city for crashes and many will point to the Rotary Traffic Circle on Brookdale Avenue.
But it doesn’t even crack the top five intersections for property damage and injury in 2015 within the city limits, according to statistics requested by Cornwall Newswatch from the Cornwall Community Police Service.
There were 1,318 crashes in 2015, relatively unchanged compared to the year before (it was 1,306 collisions in 2014).
Ninth and Sydney Streets was the worst intersection, accounting for a total of 14 crashes involving 28 people which resulted in five people injured.
Rounding out the top five were: Marleau and McConnell, Brookdale and Ninth, Ninth and Pitt and Eleventh and McConnell.
The traffic circle (Brookdale and Seventh) is the seventh worst intersection.
Of the nearly 400 collisions investigated by police, nearly two thirds of them were damage to vehicles and property while another third resulted in injuries to one or more people.
There were two people killed in 2015.
Most of mishaps happened in February and the majority of collisions happened on Thursdays, followed by Fridays.
The worst times were at 1 p.m. with a peak collision time of 4 p.m.
Of the 1,318 collisions, 86 per cent happened when weather conditions were clear.
Most of the collisions were single vehicle mishaps or drivers who either turned or rear-ended another driver.
As for sharing the road with other road users, there were 18 collisions involving people and 17 involving cyclists (one was a fatal crash between a car and a cyclist).
