AKWESASNE – A marsh fire is burning off an island shoreline in the St. Lawrence River, across from Summerstown.

South Glengarry firefighters were called just before 7 p.m. to reports of flames seen across the water at Dimitri’s Restaurant on County Road 2.

Township firefighters were later called off because it’s not in their jurisdiction.

Brilliant orange flames and smoke can been seen across the river, which is roughly three kilometers (1.89 miles) wide at that point.

Akwesasne volunteer firefighters tried to make their way out but couldn’t access the marsh fire.

Hogansburg-Akwesasne Fire Department Chief Derek Comins told Cornwall Newswatch the marsh fire was being left to burn out along the shore of Dickerson Island.
