SD&G – Both Cornwall police and SD&G O.P.P. are taking part in Operation Impact today (Friday) at the beginning of the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The campaign by Canada’s police forces is to make the nation’s roads the safest in the world.

Fortunately, there were no fatal crashes in Cornwall and SD&G during Thanksgiving weekend last year.

“The deaths, pain and broken hearts that result from carelessness behind the wheel can be prevented,” Cornwall Police Chief Daniel Parkinson said. “Police agencies across the country are collaborating on this project because they have seen more than enough of that, and because they know that the involvement of the driving public is essential to achieve safer streets and highways.”

SD&G O.P.P. will concentrate on their so-called “Big Four” – distracted, impaired and distracted driving and not wearing seat belts.

Operation Impact runs until Thanksgiving Monday night at 11:59 p.m.

The project is sponsored by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) and Transport Canada and is part of Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2015, which has a goal of making Canada’s roads the safest in the world by 2016
