CORNWALL – It’s Fire Prevention Week in the region and local fire departments have a number of activities planned.

A number of the activities in Cornwall are happening throughout the week with firefighters conducting public education visits to local schools and seniors’ homes.

On Friday, a fire expo will happen in the Walmart parking lot on Ninth Street with live burn demos, equipment and fire truck displays and children’s activities.

Friday’s event starts at 8 a.m. and goes until roughly 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

October is also Fire Prevention Month and the theme is “Hear the Beep Where you Sleep.”

In South Glengarry, firefighters will be doing door-to-door talking to residents about fire safety and “ensuring homes are safe and meet the requirements of fire safety.”

The inspections, to make sure a smoke detector is in all sleeping areas, are voluntary.

Fire Prevention Week ends Saturday (Oct. 10).
