CORNWALL – A convicted sex offender – the subject of a community warning in September last year – has been given more jail time for violating terms of his release.

William Gates, 68, was arrested in April for communicating with a person under 16 and for failing to keep the peace.

At the time, police said Gates spoke to a three-year-old girl while on a city bus and the police were called.

He was facing three probation-related charges.

Gates was given concurrent sentences this month of 150, 269 and 50 days.

With credit for time served, he will spend roughly five-and-a-half months in jail.

He will be on two years probation after his release in 2016.

Court also fined Gates $600 with two years to pay.

Gates was the subject of a community safety alert in September 2014 after he was released after serving a nine month jail sentence for possession of child pornography.
