CORNWALL – Cornwall is recognizing September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, Cornwall mother Cheryl Tourangeau and her son, Alex, raised the cancer awareness flag at the justice building on Pitt Street this week.
Alex is one of a half dozen children either receiving cancer treatment or follow-up care.
Tourangeau is working to have the gold ribbon – a symbol of childhood cancer awareness – spread throughout Cornwall as a visual sign of support.
Statistics show nearly 80 per cent of children battling cancer will survive, but there is untold stress on the child and their families.
There is also side-effects from treatment that many youth have to deal with once the cancer treatment is over.
A number of events are taking place this month highlighting cancer awareness such as the Terry Fox Run and the Mayor-Media Blood Donor Clinic.
