NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. – Groups for mayors and wardens across Eastern Ontario have signed on to a blueprint to push for economic growth in rural areas.
The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) and the Eastern Ontario Mayor’s Committee (EOMC) ratified terms of reference for a leadership council to push the Eastern Ontario Economic Development Strategy.
It happened this week during the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) annual conference in Niagara Falls.
Some of those development issues include servicing rural areas with natural gas, closing gaps in cellular service and getting a better deal from senior governments for infrastructure.
During a bear pit session with various Ontario ministry heads, the EOWC also addressed some issues for local taxpayers including policing costs and the costs of liability, where municipalities can be forced to pick up the legal tab in lawsuits where they are found only partially at fault.
“This year, I think we achieved our goal of having very frank conversations about important topics with a wide variety of people, as we continue to work collectively to effectively represent the interests of the residents and businesses of our region of Ontario,” EOWC Warden Eric Duncan said.
The Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus represents roughly 750,000 residents in rural Eastern Ontario.
