CORNWALL – A pickup truck crashed through a stand of e-bikes and scooters on Eleventh Street West Thursday afternoon.
The collision turned the mobility machines into hunks of metal and left a trail of bike parts, plastic, metal and chrome in its path and almost half a block.
The truck, A Dodge Dakota extended cab pickup, ended up striking a hydro pole outside Paquette Glass.
The force of the crash bent the driver’s side tire back 90 degrees. Paramedics and firefighters worked to remove the unconscious man from the pickup before he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
His condition is not known.
Dominador Castillo was across the street washing his car and said he heard the truck accelerate hard before plowing through the store display at Eas-E-Riders.
“I just heard it…the loud acceleration. I was here washing my car and I just seen it and (thought) ‘Oh my God’…I knew there was something wrong because he (had) no control at that time and then bang, bang, bang, bang,” Castillo told Cornwall Newswatch.
The crash caused roughly $20,000 damage at the store.
A section of Eleventh Street West from Churchill Street to Daly Avenue was closed for a police investigation.
A worker for Cornwall Electric said the hydro pole was not broken but a wire protector had been smashed at the base of the pole.
