CORNWALL – A woman has died in hospital after a violent collision at the intersection of Cumberland and Water Streets.
The crash between a van and a car happened around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Decals on the Dodge Caravan, a specialized conversion van for wheelchair occupants, identify it as belonging to the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Department of Health. The car is a blue Mazda 3.
The force of the crash set off the airbags in both vehicles.
There were two people in the van and one person in the car, police said.
Cornwall Police Const. Robert Archambault told Cornwall Newswatch a 65-year-old passenger in the van succumbed to their injuries at the Cornwall Community Hospital.
The identity of the female victim has not been released until relatives are notified.
The minivan has extensive front-end damage while the car has driver’s side damage. Both are in the middle of Water Street as traffic investigators still work the scene late Tuesday night.
The area around Cumberland and Water Streets was still closed to traffic as of 11 p.m. but Archambault believes the roads should be open before the morning commute.
Any witnesses are urged to call investigating officer Const. Matt Dupuis at 613-933-5000 extension 2755.
