COMMENTARY: John Earle: the consummate nice guy

I’m Bill Kingston with today’s commentary. It’s numbing when a person with so much life, energy and passion is suddenly cut from the fabric of Cornwall and our lives. John Earle had it all – a loving family, a small business, a producer of documentaries and a lover of antiques and music. During the 2014 election campaign, I interviewed John a number of times. He was the consummate nice guy, always the professional and truly cared about the community that he lived and worked in. We may not have seen politically eye-to-eye, but I admired his drive and passion for what he believed in. He was just a fun person to be around. He was a man who would look adversity in the eye and defeat it, proudly telling me that he was a cancer survivor. Taking that first foray into politics may have shaken many new people to the core but John seemed to be a natural for the political spotlight. His interest in all things water was also seen during his work with the speaker series with the St. Lawrence River Institute a few years back. If we can take any solace in John’s passing, it happened during something that he loved to do, something that he enjoyed with his wife, Alyssa. May he rest in peace and that his family be given the strength moving forward.
