Unemployment up slightly in Eastern Ontario

SD&G – The region’s jobless rate ticked up a notch last month.

The regional unemployment for an area from Brockville to Ottawa and east to the Quebec border was at 6.5 per cent last month.

That’s up 0.1 per cent from May.

Meantime, the unadjusted unemployment rate in Cornwall dropped to 9.6 per cent from 10 per cent in May.

The figure gives an idea of an overall trend but job market watchers put little stock in the number due to its small sample size.

Canada’s economy lost 6,400 jobs in June – better than analysts’ expectations of a loss of 10,000 jobs – but it was not enough to move the unemployment rate from 6.8 per cent.

Ontario added 14,000 jobs for the month and its jobless rate in June also unchanged at 6.5 per cent.
