CORNWALL – Cornwall’s fire chief has put the city on notice that hiring four firefighters will be discussed this summer.

Pierre Voisine told council Monday night the “overtime will increase exponentially” as the fire service heads into the summer months.

City council had held off on hiring four firefighters until the new fire chief got into his position.

Coun. Andre Rivette suggested the fire service should allow fewer workers on any given shift to take time off for vacation.

Voisine suggests that practice is already being exercised in order for the city to meet its mandatory staffing level of 10 firefighters on shift.

Coun. Mark MacDonald suggested the current course of funding protective services will bankrupt the municipality in the long run.
