HOGANSBURG, N.Y. – Traffic to the United States from Akwesasne and also from Cornwall to the U.S. has been halted and will likely be closed for most of the weekend.

Seaway International Bridge Corporation spokesman Andre Girard tells Cornwall Newswatch the bridge has been closed since 8:30 a.m. this morning.

Engineers have discovered an extension joint on the bridge deck at the south tower has shifted causing a misalignment of the bridge deck, he said.

Speaking with CNW just before 1 p.m. Friday, Girard says the bridge will be closed for up to 48 hours.

Girard maintains the integrity of the bridge is good and the latest inspection reports for the south span show β€œit’s in perfect condition.”

“The SIBC is proud to have always maintained an unblemished safety record and will continue to do so,” the company added in a news release.

Emergency vehicles will still be permitted to cross in a controlled fashion.

The Canada Border Services Agency is recommending travellers use the border crossing at Prescott as an alternate in the meantime.
