Talks to begin on Upper Canada Road

MORRISBURG – Stakeholders in Upper Canada Road will be sitting down to figure out a plan to transfer responsibility back to the township.

The municipality learned last fall that it was the owner of the road since 1975 even though the St. Lawrence Parks Commission has been maintaining it since that time.

In a report to council tonight (Tuesday), CAO Steve McDonald says the commission is not looking for an immediate solution but it wants to rid its responsibility for the road, which is a major connector between County Road 2 and Highway 401.

McDonald says in the “short to medium term” the road will need resurfacing and reconstruction.

The plan is to invite the United Counties into any future discussions.

“As the owner of the road, we are currently reviewing our potential liability exposure to ensure appropriate coverage is in place,” CAO Steve McDonald writes.
