Kashechewan evacuees arrive in Cornwall

CORNWALL – Several evacuees from Kashechewan, near James Bay, were already settling in at Cornwall’s Nav Center Saturday night.

They were part of a group of some 600 to 700 residents to leave the First Nations community as a risk of flooding worsens.

Many could be seen waiting at the bus shelter outside Nav Center Saturday night, presumably waiting to take transit to other areas of the city.

There’s a risk the dam near the community could break from ice jams along the Albany River.

The groups are being housed in Cornwall as well as Ottawa and other location in Northern Ontario.

Almost all of the 1,900 residents are expected to be out of the reserve within a week.
