Seaway opens for 57th season

ST. LAMBERT, Que. – With the newly-built CWB Marquis travelling through the St. Lambert Lock this morning, the St. Lawrence Seaway officially opened its 2015 season.

It was the first of two Equinox-class ships ordered by Winnipeg-based grain marketer CWB specifically for the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The official start time was 8 a.m. this morning (Thursday).

It would be appropriate that a grain vessel would be first through the system as the seaway has seen 12 million metric tons of grain moved through the transportation network last year – the highest volume since the beginning of the 21st century.

“CWB’s recent investment in ships underlines the importance of the St. Lawrence Seaway to Canada’s agricultural industry,” says Terence Bowles, President and CEO of the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.

A high ice buildup delayed the opening of the seaway this year by a week – the first time it has been delayed since 1997.
