CORNWALL — In a statement from Future Shop’s headquarters released Saturday morning, company officials have announced the immediate closing of all Future Shop locations across Canada including the Brookdale Avenue location in Cornwall.
The move comes as part of a plan by parent company, Best Buy Co., Inc, to integrate Future Shop locations under the Best Buy branding. According to the statement, 66 stores will be closed permanently, 65 Future Shop stores will be retained and will reopen on April 4 under the Best Buy banner. Renovations are planned for later in the year. Future Shop locations in Cornwall and in Brockville were not initially on the list of stores to reopen, however signs have now been posted stating the Cornwall location will reopen on April 4 as a Best Buy location. Signs posted at Brockville’s location show it will remain closed permanently.
The Cornwall location of Future Shop opened less than six months ago on November 14, 2014 at the corner of Brookdale Avenue and Tollgate Road as part of a new, smaller, “boutique” style of store for the chain. It was one of three locations in this new store format.
According to Best Buy Canada, the move will eliminate 500 full-time jobs and 1,000 part-time jobs. The store employed 32 people at opening. Details regarding staff layoffs at the Cornwall location have not been released yet.
“The affected employees will receive severance, employee assistance and outplacement support,” Best Buy said in its statement.
For customers who have “ship-to-store” and online orders, or have service scheduled, a guide has been published on the company’s website at futureshop.com.
