HERMON, N.Y. – A federal trial for a couple accused to abducting two Amish girls in St. Lawrence County, New York, is scheduled to begin today (Monday).

Stephen Howells II, 39, and girlfriend Nicole Vaisey, 25, are also accused of possessing child pornography and exploiting six girls, including the Amish sisters.

Among the charges is first-degree kidnapping.

The two Amish sisters, ages 7 and 12, were picked up from a farm stand in Heuvelton, just south of Ogdensburg, N.Y. on Aug. 13, 2014.

The girls were later found following an intense search across the north country.

The accused faced more charges in the weeks following the August arrest – with Vaisey indicted on 10 counts of Howells on 21 counts of child pornography charges involving a half dozen children.

The case made national headlines south of the border.
