AKWESASNE, Que. – The week has ended with no sign of an Akwesasne snowmobiler presumed drowned in the Salmon River near the mouth of the St. Lawrence River.
The Hogansburg-Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department has been leading the search operation since Sunday Feb. 15 when two snowmobiles went through ice.
The body of Brandon Sweeting, 26, was found on the ice of Lac St. Francois, according to the Plattsburgh Press-Republican.
Divers have since found both Sweeting’s machine and the snowmobile of the other rider – described as man in his 30s.
The other man’s name is not being released out of respect for the family.
Searchers faced the harshest weather on Friday since the search began when windy conditions coupled with frigid temperatures made it feel like minus 34 Celsius (29 below zero Fahrenheit).
It’s not clear when the search will continue.
