CORNWALL – “It’s not about the problem, it’s about how we’re going to work thought them. I own a bike and I’m on the bike all the time. This a safety issue.”
Those words from Coun. Mark MacDonald as council gave the go-ahead Monday night to his motion to have staff prepare a report on the cost of re-establishing Second Street East as a four-lane street.
Coun. Carilyne Hebert noted the bike lanes were only installed in the fall. “We haven’t had an opportunity to see them in full force. We are wasting staff time. We want a green, healthy community. (This move) would be one step forward and 10 back.”
Coun. Hebert and Elaine MacDonald were the only councillors to vote against drafting the report, with MacDonald emphasizing this is the latest move to get people out of their cars. “This is part of a changing world,” she said noting, “climate change is a big factor.”
“Change is tough,” Coun. Bernadette Clement added, saying the city needs to give the new bike lanes about a year.
Coun. Andre Rivette says there’s nothing wrong with asking for a report. “Maybe it (the bike lanes) should have been a street over. I’m not saying we are not in favour of the bike lane. The concerns (from the public) are warranted.”
The report is expected at the next council meeting in two weeks.
