CORNWALL – Cornwall will continue moving forward with medical recruitment but is not about to get into bed with stakeholders to set up a group practice.
“The (medical recruitment) team has done a tremendous job of finding specialists and general practitioners,” Economic Development Manager Mark Boileau told the budget committee Friday morning.
Boileau says the medical recruitment fund, which started out with $250,000 in 2011 has now been depleted to $26,000.
The economic development department is requesting $100,000 for the medical recruitment fund and three-quarters of that is already spoken for in the form of a repayable loan to a specialist.
The team was successful in awarding scholarships to medical students Sara Robichaud and Brent Patterson and another is planned in 2015.
The department was also asked about setting up a group practice but Boileau says the city is not in a position to get into that. “I’ll be coming to council in the coming year to speak about that (but) I’m not making a request for that,” Boileau said.
Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy asked if economic development had been in discussions with Dan Gauthier, the developer of the former Second Street hospital site.
Boileau says there have been discussions and a meeting is planned soon between economic development, the head of the medical recruitment team and Gauthier to learn more about his vision.
