CORNWALL – Residents in the north wing of the Brookdale Arms had to be evacuated Monday night after smoke filled several hallways of the apartment complex.

Cornwall firefighters were called around 9:30 p.m., shortly after finishing with a tractor trailer crash on Highway 401, to deal with smoke in the basement of the building.

One tenant who lives in a basement apartment tells Cornwall Newswatch people were banging on tenants’ doors to get them out.

While residents of the north wing of the complex at 1451 Brookdale Avenue waited outside in the bitter cold, firefighters started airing out to building.

The tenant says emergency officials made some accommodations in order to get family pets back inside the building ahead of time and out of conditions, which were about minus 22 at the time.

Residents were able to return around 9:45 p.m.

The cause of the fire and the amount of damage is not immediately known.
