MPP Jim McDonell’s office issued the following statement after pre-budget consultations alongside MPP Steve Clark on Friday Jan. 23, 2015 at the Cornwall Best Western:
Ontario residents will have even less money after Liberals’ upcoming 2015 provincial budget, Ontario PC MPPs Steve Clark (Leeds-Grenville) and Jim McDonell (Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry) warned today.
“People have already been taxed to the limit with the health tax, eco-taxes, HST and the sneaky Global Adjustment on our energy bills,” said McDonell. “Enough is enough. Tax revenue for the government is $30 billion more a year than it was in 2003, but we’ll be paying even more going forward because of Liberal mismanagement.”
McDonell and Clark pointed to the failing grade of 39.5 for fiscal management given to Premier Wynne in the recent Fraser Institute report.
“It’s insulting that the financially illiterate Liberals are imposing a new payroll tax for their new pension scheme,” said Clark. “The reason people aren’t saving more for retirement is because they are paying for reckless Liberal spending. Forcing employees and employers to pay even more will just make it worse as more jobs are lost and pocketbooks are emptied.”
“Now the Liberals are setting the stage to make everything more expensive with a carbon tax that is really just an excuse to bankroll mounting interest payments caused by their doubling of provincial debt,” said McDonell. “They continue to mismanage the economy, but taxpayers and businesses are the ones paying for their mistakes.”
The Liberals have been told repeatedly by the Ontario PC caucus, the Auditor General, and most recently by credit rating agencies that they’re taking the wrong approach.
“Today at pre-budget hearings, we are being told by multiple community organizations and leaders that services are being threatened and priorities are not being met,” concluded McDonell. “We’re paying more, but getting less.”
