The City of Cornwall issued the following statement Thursday afternoon in response to the closing of Target’s 133 retail stores, which will affect the Cornwall distribution center:

Further to today’s announcement by Target that it will be closing all of its Canadian operations, the City of Cornwall will be closely monitoring its impact locally.

The City had no prior knowledge of this announcement and is currently seeking additional information from the company to determine the impact this will have on the Eleven Points Distribution Centre in the Cornwall Business Park. The distribution centre employs approximately 350 people and is owned by Target, but operated by a separate company, Eleven Points Logistics (EPL).

“Our thoughts at this time are with the local employees and families of the Eleven Points Distribution Centre who will be affected by today’s announcement,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy.

“It is a major employer in our community and there could be other negative spin-offs for local businesses that provide services to the distribution centre. We are still attempting to determine the overall impact to the City and we will provide additional information once it becomes available.”
