WINCHESTER – The Ministry of Environment’s investigations and enforcement branch is looking into an ammonia leak at the Parmalat cheese factory.

One nearby homeowner, a block away from the factory, complained about the overpowering smell inside her home on Wednesday last week.

She later called a home-inspector friend who said the smell was intense, according to CBC News.

The odour had evidently come though a storm sewer via a faulty pipe in the house.

The leak reportedly involved less than a liter of ammonia at the factory near Gladstone Street and Main Street West and was an isolated event, which was reported to the MOE.

The enforcement branch of the MOE will determine if charges will be laid.
