IROQUOIS – The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation (SLSMC) announced that the Iroquois lock team was selected to receive the President’s Safety Award for 2014.
The St. Lawrence locks are a series of lift systems designed to safely bring large shipping boats up or down through different levels of the river.
“The Iroquois team’s efforts are commendable,” said Terence Bowles, President and CEO of The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation.
The Iroquois lock team has completed 215 safety interventions, out of a total of 1,500 completed within the SLSMC. The team was responsible for many innovations such as creating a mechanism to deploy an oil containment boom, as well as a jib meant to safely lower materials in the cable gallery. The Iroquois team has a 21 year streak in which no time was lost due to injury.
The President’s Safety Award was created to raise awareness about workplace safety, and to recognize teams who make significant contributions to enhancing safety measures at SLSMC.
