MASSENA, N.Y. – Reduced operating hours and another store gone are the latest changes to affect the St. Lawrence Centre in Massena.

Once a bustling shopping center with hundreds of cross-border shoppers, the facility is struggling with a weakening Canadian dollar and a number of store closures.

But General Manager David Viola tells the Daily Courier-Observer the reduced hours are a cost-savings measure and not an indication the mall is closing.

The mall will now be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Sunday is unchanged (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.).

The store manager of U.S. national closing retailer Deb Shops told the Courier-Observer the store would be closing, likely by April.

It’s the latest in a string of closures including Sears, Twisted Turtle, Bath & Body Works, Express, Memory Lane, Auntie Anne’s, Sbarro’s and FYE (which is about to close).

The mall still has just over 30 tenants.
