ST. ANDREWS WEST – A couple escaped their car Monday night before the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier burst into flames.

It happened around 9:45 p.m. at 4825 Highway 138, about three kilometers north of St. Andrews West.

“The gentleman was having some problems with his car and smelled something burning and called us right away,” South Stormont Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Dave Pidgeon told Cornwall Newswatch.

Pidgeon says seven of his men rushed to the scene, which was at the foot of a driveway.

The car was fully engulfed in fire by the time they arrived and flames could be seen shooting out from underneath the back wheels and near the gas tank.

Assistant Deputy Chief Pidgeon says the car is basically a write-off.

The man and his wife, who live in the area, escaped unharmed.

A highway crew had to be called out to throw down salt on part of the highway near the foot of the driveway where the fire happened.
