CORNWALL – A combination of flurries, blowing snow and temperatures just below freezing have turned portions of Highway 401 into a dangerous, slippery mess.
O.P.P. tweeted this afternoon advising motorists to be careful as condition are right for black ice.
The worst carnage appears to be just west of Kingston, near Odessa, where multiple media outlets are reporting crashes involving 75-100 vehicles.
The eastbound lanes of the highway are closed from Marysville to Highway 15 in Kingston.
Closer to home, there were reports of at least five vehicles in the ditch in the westbound lanes between Lancaster and Summerstown.
Near Brockville, Recorder and Times photojournalist Darcy Cheek tweeted about near whiteout conditions on Highway 416 heading to Ottawa.
Cheek also reported a transport truck and snowplow collision on Highway 401 west of Brockville.
The flurries and the wind (gusting to 50-60 km/h) is expected to continue for the rest of the afternoon and into tonight.
