Flu shot still offers protection: EOHU

SD&G – Despite it not being a perfect match for this year’s flu strain, the Eastern Ontario Health Unit is still recommending you get the flu shot.

The influenza A-H3N2 has apparently morphed and doesn’t perfectly match the strain that this year’s flu vaccine was meant to protect people from contracting.

“The mismatch means that some people may still get the flu, even if they’ve been vaccinated,” read a statement, in part, from the EOHU.

Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health, says the vaccine is still effective, even if slightly mismatched, because it will lessen the symptoms if you do get the flu, including severity and length of infection.

Dr. Roumeliotis says some protection is better than no protection, especially for high risk groups like the elderly and young children.

For more information on getting a flu shot you can call the health unit office at 613-933-1375.
