ALEXANDRIA – North Glengarry will help with fires close to the northern border of its southern neighbour.

The township signed a five-year mutual aid agreement with South Glengarry last month.

Under the terms of the agreement, North Glengarry fire crews will be dispatched if a fire call comes from a certain zone in South Glengarry.

The area in question is more or less a sliver of land from County Road 20 to County Road 34. It also covers the south side of Kenyon Concession Road 1 and Valley View Road and the community of Green Valley.

North Glengarry Mayor Chris McDonell told The Glengarry News if their fire crews can get to Green Valley five to 10 minutes earlier than Lancaster, that could be the difference in saving someone’s life.

The better fire protection does come at a cost to South Glengarry. The township will be billed $175 an hour for each piece of equipment used, 49 cents per kilometer for travel as well as the wages for the firefighters responding to the call.

After five years, the agreement will automatically renew on a yearly basis, unless either side decides to terminate the contract.
