CORNWALL – The manager of the St. Lawrence Seaway is planning a coordinated shutdown of the lock system to all traffic should workers walk off the job Friday afternoon.
St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation responded Wednesday to the 72 hour strike notice delivered to them Tuesday as talks resumed between both sides.
The main sticking point is staffing levels.
Unifor, which represents 460 workers from Niagara to Montreal, fears their jobs will be eliminated as the seaway moves toward automating the system for getting ships up and down the waterway.
In a release, the corporation says it’s committed to “obtaining a fair settlement and will continue to bargain in good faith.”
