AVONMORE – A 500 ac. dairy farm has been recognized for being run by one of the ten best farm families in Ontario.
Jim and Nancy Wert of Stanlee Farms were awarded the 2014 BMO Ontario Farm Family Award for promoting urban-rural relationships and enhancing the quality of life for the agriculture community.
The Werts have hosted “Breakfast on the Farm” – a program where city folk come and have breakfast, take tours and find out what happens on the farm. This year was the second year for the August event for Farm & Food Care Ontario, which has drawn over 2,000 people.
Stanlee Farms also celebrated its 150th anniversary this year.
The BMO award is organized by the Ontario Plowmen’s Association and each local branch nominates a farm in their area.
The Werts took part in a ceremony at the International Plowing Match in Ivy, Ont. last month and were recognized last week at the PC Riding Association Harvest Dinner in Morrisburg.
Stanlee Farms, which is being run by the fifth generation of the Wert family, went through a major renovation and rebuild in 2006.
