SD&G – The unemployment rate held steady in Eastern Ontario in September. The jobless rate was at 7% last month, the same as in August. The figure covers and area from Brockville to Ottawa and east to Quebec.
Meanwhile, the unadjusted rate for Cornwall was at 5.3% in September. That’s down from 6.4% in August. This is the fourth straight month of a decline in the jobless figure. The numbers suggest roughly 400 people found work. The labour force also shrunk with 700 people leaving the labour force (stopped an active search for work).
Across the country, the economy added 74,100 net new jobs, dropping the unemployment rate to its lowest level in six years. It stood at 6.8% in September, down 0.2% from August.
Ontario added the most jobs of any province with 24,700 new positions, dropping its unemployment rate down by 0.3% to 7.1%.
