Tractor-trailer fire shuts down EB 401 overnight

(Newswatch Group/File)

INGLESIDE, Ont. – A mechanical failure on a set of tractor-trailer wheels is blamed for a massive fire on Highway 401 near Ingleside overnight. SD&G O.P.P. and South Stormont firefighters were called after the back wheels of the truck burst into flames in the eastbound lanes of the highway, just east of Dickenson Dr., around 12:15 a.m. this morning. Township firefighters had to slow down and stop traffic before police arrived on scene. It took just over an hour to get the fire under control and put it out. Police say the truck was carrying dog food. The driver, a 36-year-old Etobicoke man, was able to escape injury. Eastbound traffic was detoured between Dickenson Dr. in Ingleside and Moulinette Rd. in Long Sault but the highway has since reopened as of late this morning.
