Arrest in Jean Coutu robbery

CORNWALL – Less than 24 hours after an armed robbery at a Cornwall pharmacy, police have made an arrest in the case.

Cornwall police performed a traffic stop in the area of the Century Motel on Brookdale Avenue (two doors down from Tim Hortons, south of Thirteenth Street) around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

At least four police cruisers were in the area of the hotel, witnesses shared on social media.

“We have made one arrest…a male is in custody,” Acting Sgt. Derek Duchesne told Cornwall Newswatch.

The suspect’s name hasn’t been released, though he has been identified as a 26-year-old Cornwall man.

A masked man went into Jean Coutu on Ninth Street East around 8:30 p.m. Monday and pulled out a handgun and demanded drugs from the clerk.

“The investigation at this point in time is still fluid and ongoing and more information will become available in the near future.” Det. Sgt. Chad Maxwell said.

Maxwell also commended other officers who “volunteered to stay late on Halloween evening” in order to investigate the case make a quick arrest.
