CORNWALL – Drivers through Long Sault will likely see construction shortly on two roundabouts on County Road 2.
County council awarded a nearly $2.2 million contract Monday morning for Cornwall Gravel to construct the roundabouts at Moulinette Road (County Road 35) and Milles Roches Road (County Road 36).
Cornwall Gravel was among five area companies to bid for the contract.
Part of the overall cost will be offset by a grant from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund of $980,000.
“So this is it…Long Sault. It came in on budget which is fantastic news,” County Engineer Ben de Haan told council.
De Haan indicated he would be talking with Cornwall Gravel shortly and work would probably begin in the next two to three weeks.
The county has spent around $250,000 so far in preliminary engineering and design work as well as an environmental assessment.
County Coun. Eric Duncan also pointed out because “it drives me crazy” that there are many other components to the project, including pedestrian walkways and lane configurations.
“To clarify this, it’s more of a Long Sault modernization project as opposed to a roundabout project,” Duncan said. “So people don’t think we’re paying a million dollars each for two circular asphalt pieces.”
Cornwall Gravel is contractually obligated to have the roundabouts running by the end of the year. Some landscaping will be done in 2018.
