SD&G – SD&G O.P.P. and Cornwall police are warning you to be on the lookout for children walking to school and heading to the school bus.
Students will start returning to schools today (Tuesday) as classes at French Catholic and French public schools begin.
More police cruisers will also be out over the next couple of weeks looking for law-breakers. City police say they are taking a “zero tolerance level” to these type of offences.
“Drivers are reminded to be attentive as students of our communities return to school”, SD&G O.P.P. Detachment Commander Mike Mulhearn said. “Safety is everyone’s responsibility so be aware of pedestrians and school buses.”
If you’re caught not stopping for a school bus, it’s a minimum fine of $490 and six demerit points.
Not slowing down in designated Community Safety Zones also leads to stiffer fines.
The city is also reminding motorists that crossing guards will be on duty at intersections throughout Cornwall and disobeying them can net you a $180 ticket and three demerit points.
