CORNWALL – Ministry planes will be dropping rabies vaccine bait packets around Cornwall this weekend.
Roughly 25,000 of the small khaki green packets were expected to be offloaded around the city today (Saturday) and tomorrow.
It’s part of a plan to keep the animal population – specifically skunks, foxes and raccoons – rabies-free.
There’s been a threat of rabies from New York State, said the ministry.
If you see the packets, which have a toll-free rabies hotline number stamped on them, you’re asked not to touch them.
On the surface, they are not harmful to people or pets but if you or your pet come into contact with the vaccine inside you’re asked to seek medical attention as a precaution.
The ministry says raccoons have been free of rabies since September 2005.
Ontario had 18 cases of rabies last year – all in bats.
