SQUAMISH, B.C. – A tragic end for a former Williamstown man participating in an extreme sport in British Columbia.

Kyle MacDonald-Wolochatiuk, 40, died Sunday night when he ran into problems during a speed-flying session at Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, about 60 kilometers north of Vancouver, B.C.

Speed-flying is a sport similar to hand-gliding but uses a smaller wing leading to fast descents.

The B.C. coroner’s office told B.C. media that MacDonald-Wolochatiuk took off from a peak and hit a tree before falling 500 meters (1,640 feet) to the ground.

Kyle’s father, Nick, is a long time columnist with the Seaway News.

He leaves behind his pregnant wife, Krista Besner, who is set to deliver their child this week.
