BAINSVILLE – Nearly two metric tons of fine cut tobacco has been seized by the Cornwall Regional Task Force after officers stopped a truck on County Road 2 last month.
The bust was made April 21 but the CRTF only released details Thursday.
Officers, staked out near Bainville, spotted a boat without its lights on leaving the shoreline.
Shortly after, a U-Haul truck pulled away, heading east on County Road 2 and that’s when officers moved in and stopped the truck.
Inside, they found garbage bags with 1,710 kilograms (1.71 metric tons) of fine cut tobacco, which was seized along with the truck.
Police say the tobacco is worth $153,900.
A 55-year-old driver and a 22-year-old passenger – both from Quebec – were both arrested and charged under the Excise Act.
This case was part of a month where the CRTF seized 1,987 kilograms of cut tobacco, 11 case an 131 baggies of cigarettes, six cases of cigars, 206 grams of marijuana and three vehicles.
