CORNWALL – Cornwall’s signature winter festival has been cancelled for 2015. Winterfest, which runs to coincide with the Family Day weekend in February, in Lamoureux Park and the Civic Complex, has been put on hiatus.

Jason Mitchell, chairman of the event explains, “There is a bigger picture in place for a 2016 Winterfest Extravaganza but many things have to be accomplished from now till then, even if it means a one-year hiatus on our community’s signature winter festival.”

This community event has been held since 2008, with attendance steadily increasing over the last few years. Mitchell touched on the struggles and demand of producing a free admission event year after year.

“In the last five years, our free admission festival has grown to attracting over 30,000 yearly and has offered hundreds of activities highlighted by three nights of fireworks in 2013.”

Mitchell is looking forward to overcoming the hurdles they have been facing and delivering an extravaganza in 2016.

“To keep up to the growth and try to deliver the same free excitement every year, unfortunately, sometimes you have to take a step back to move two steps forward – which is the case as we move towards 2016,” he said in a statement to Cornwall Newswatch.

Mitchell says to expect more information to be released soon.
