CORNWALL – One of the two victims in Wednesday’s fire in a triplex on Lefebvre Ave. has died in hospital.

Fire Chief Richard McCullough tells Cornwall Newswatch the male tenant at 109 Lefebvre Ave. died of his injuries yesterday in an Ottawa hospital.

McCullough is hoping to have an update later today (Friday) on the condition of the woman pulled from the burning building around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters found the two tenants – one hiding under a kitchen table and another on the living room floor – under a cloud of thick, black smoke.

They were given CPR by firefighters before being rushed to hospital by ambulance and then airlifted to Ottawa.

The identity of the victims has not been released.

Cornwall police say the male victim is 59-years-old.

The Ontario Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy.

Police are holding the scene saying, at this time, it’s unclear whether it’s a police matter.

The Ontario Fire Marshal and the Cornwall fire prevention office were on the scene Thursday and completed their investigation but McCullough says the cause has not yet been determined.
