CORNWALL, Ont. – The city has taken another step toward boosting cell phone service within the city limits. City council agreed tonight to allow Union PhiQi Corporation to build a 57 meter tower at the north end of Wallrich Avenue. Councillor Berndette Clement praised the addition of another tower given the problems residents have with roaming charges. But she questioned how the sites are picked. This one is on private land. Planning Supervisor Ken Bedford told Clement the city liaises with companies but the companies really drive the locations picked. Clement was wondering if the city was missing out on a revenue opportunity, given the 20 year deal inked in March with Rogers. The city stands to make roughly $230,000 from that deal on city land on Saunders Drive. The new tower on Wallrich Avenue will service Wind Mobile customers. But Bedford told council there will be space on the tower for other cell phone companies to set up shop.
